Love all things art and culture? The 12th edition of Abu Dhabi Art is making a grand return to the capital from Thursday November 19 to Thursday November 26 and there’s plenty to look forward to.
This year, the diverse art fair will present a digital-only programme with a new virtual fair but art aficionados can still expect an engaging programme of art installations, exhibitions, talks and more.
Abu Dhabi Art has also revealed details for its annual Beyond: Emerging Artists programme.
As always, the programme will showcase and support up-and-coming Emirati artists and the theme for this year is “memory”.
Beyond: Emerging Artists 2020 had been curated by Maya El Khalil who has selected artists Hind Mezaina, Afra Al Dhaheri and Afra Al Suwaidi and their pieces can be viewed via the Abu Dhabi Art website or at Manarat Al Saadiyat, where they’ll be exhibited from Thursday November 19 until the end of the year.
Exploring the theme of memory, Hind Mezaina will be using multimedia archival materials such as photography and archival film to express elements of collective memory, masculinity, heritage, and the UAE, while Afra Al Suwaidi will present her work through a process of collage, using fragmented visual memories embodied in domestic architectural forms.
Using her own reclaimed hair, Afra Al Dhaheri’s works explore self-identity and draw on broader social associations related to female hair.
Abu Dhabi Art will also be bringing together a number of galleries and artists from across the world through its curated gallery sections including ‘The Day After’ curated by Simon Njami, ‘Material – Real’ curated by Sung Woo Kim, ‘India Today’ curated by Ashwin Thadani and ‘A Picture Held Us Captive’ curated by Nada Raza.
The 2020 digital fair will also host a public performing arts programme, curated by Rose Lejeune and there will also be a series of cultural conversations and panels featuring some of the art world’s leading figures.
