Passengers travel by sky pod for the first time in Sharjah

High-speed electric pods on the move

Do you want to step into the future?

Passengers have climbed aboard the debut service of Sharjah‘s new uSky high-speed electric sky pods for the very first time.

The sci-fi-esque feat of engineering could provide the inspiration for greener transport options for both people and goods in the future.

The four-seater UCar takes less than a minute to travel the 400-metre test track at the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park.

Developers uSky Transport and Unitsky String Technologies of Belarus are developing a bigger test track by November, with plans to eventually construct a permanent commercial line. The service could open as early as September 2023.

The suspended mode of transport is less invasive than others because it doesn’t require the demolition of homes or natural spaces.

It’s a power-saving solution that requires much less energy than cars, with an electrical motor that can be powered by wind or solar energy.

The cargo version would be capable of delivering 12m containers at high speeds, taking them off the roads and into the air.

The technology could also one day mean a 20-minute commute from Dubai to Abu Dhabi… now that’s something we’d love to see.

A common refrain among UAE residents and visitors alike is how futuristic it feels to be here. Hybrid-electric supercars race across the highways, man-made islands can be seen from space, lakes spell out love, and missions to Mars are splashed across our headlines.

The UAE is undoubtedly forward-thinking, and the sky pods in Sharjah are yet another example of how exciting the innovation here can be.
