Whether it’s to visit the zoo, the oasis or just to escape for a bit of peace and quiet, Al Ain always has so much to offer. But now that a new cultural programme has been announced for this green and pleasant land, we have even more reasons for paying it a visit.
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced a series of interactive and educational activities taking place at Al Ain Palace Museum, Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain Museum and numerous other sites across the city.
Running from now until April, the events are designed to showcase Emirati culture, history and heritage.
Head over to Al Jahili Fort, one of the UAE’s largest and most iconic structures, and you can take part in a special morning tour. Covering the many different towers, irrigation canals, Al Jahili Fort Mosque and the square fort of Al Murabba, the session will also touch on the recent restoration work that has taken place here.
Then, from March 15, the Emirates Heritage Club and the Emirates Falconers Club is hosting a fun introduction to the world of falconry. Also being held at Al Jahili Fort, the evening tour will explore why this pastime is such a vital part of Emirati heritage.
Meanwhile, music lovers won’t want to miss the performance from the Abu Dhabi Police Band on February 14. Taking place from 10am until noon, the show will feature 140 musicians alongside various military formations and marches.
Or, if arts and crafts are more your thing, then you need to check out the Herfaty programme of workshops (covering Al-Sadu weaving, pottery, talli, burqa making and much more) at Al Ain Palace Museum on April 16.
The Freej Awal or ‘vintage era’ event is also taking place at the same venue that day. Featuring traditional games, educational workshops and activities, it’s a fun and hands-on way of learning about Emirati heritage. All the workshops and activities are free of charge and open to all ages.
Finally, Al Ain Museum has put together an exhibition of historical and archaeological pieces that have played a significant role in shaping the UAE. Voyage of an Object is intended to be a thought-provoking and highly interesting display that will give you a real sense of how the city existed in days of yore.
