Avant-garde exhibition coming to Louvre Abu Dhabi

Rendevouz in Paris will be on display from September

We’re already totally in love with Louvre Abu Dhabi, but the next exhibition has possibly taken us towards full-on obsession.

Rendezvous in Paris: Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani & Co. (1900-1939), will showcase more than 80 works of art by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Marc Chagall, Juan Gris, Chaïm Soutine, Constantin Brancusi and Tamara de Lempicka.

It will be on display in the Saadiyat Island museum from September 18 to December 7 and will trace the creative output of emigrant artists living and working in Paris throughout the first half of the 20th century.

The exhibition is being held in partnership with Paris’ Centre Pompidou and organised with Agence France-Muséums.

Paintings, sculptures and photographs from 50 avant-garde artists will show how the cosmopolitan and dynamic Paris of the Roaring Twenties gave birth to some of the 12th century’s greatest works of art.

Many artists travelled from their home countries across Europe to experience Paris in the years after World War one.

Manuel Rabaté, director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, says: “We are confident that [the exhibition] will be a great start to our ambitious new 2019-20 season. For the first time ever in Abu Dhabi, residents and visitors will be able to see works by Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani, Delaunay, Lipchitz and other masters in a show encompassing the key movements of 20th century Modern art. This gathering of the widest ever range of classical Modernists’ works in the UAE reflects our commitment to bringing art from all over the world to our diverse audience.”

Dr. Souraya Noujaim, Scientific, Curatorial & Collections management director at Louvre Abu Dhabi, adds: “From Cubism and Fauvism to Russian Avant-Garde and other genres, this exhibition will highlight the incredible contributions to Modern art by émigré artists in Paris. Encapsulating the foundation of Louvre Abu Dhabi as a universal museum, Rendezvous in Paris brings together crosscultural artworks, showcasing one of the key aspects of our mission.”

The exhibition will trace the journeys of the artists and examine the devleopment of their styles using a variety of interactive experiences. It includes masterpieces from Centre Pompidou such as Picasso’s Woman seated in an armchair, Modigliani’s Portrait of Dédie and de Lempicka’s Girl in a green dress.
