Burj Al Arab helipad to host first art exhibition

Dubai artist Sacha Jafri will display 30 paintings to celebrate UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Ready to take your art experience to the next level? The Burj Al Arab is hosting its first-ever art exhibition: The Art Maze.

Andre Agassi and Roger Federer have played tennis on it, F1 driver David Coulthard has spun donuts on it, boxer Anthony Joshua once held a sparring session up there, and Tiger Woods has hit a golf ball from it – the Burj Al Arab helipad is an iconic structure that is synonymous with Dubai. And this month the world-famous building will be the setting for yet another milestone.

Artist Sacha Jafri will host an art exhibition on the helipad – 212 metres above sea level – in a first for the famous architectural landmark. The Art Maze will display Jafri’s paintings in a custom built 12-metre by 12-metre steel labyrinthine gallery designed by multi-disciplinary artist Marcus Schaefer.

The unique art show on the 24-metre wide platform celebrates the 50th anniversary of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites and it will run from Wednesday March 23 to Sunday March 27.

Jafri will showcase 30 oil and acrylic paintings that depict 30 World Heritage Sites in an attempt to reconnect people with culture. The maze will give visitors the opportunity to choose their own path through the exhibition, while technology will enable them to engage with the art in an interactive way and learn about each UNESCO World Heritage Site via VR and AR experiences.

Due to the high security at Burj Al Arab, The Art Maze will be a strictly invite-only event for VIPs, celebrities, entrepreneurs, HNWI and art collectors. After the Dubai launch, The Art Maze will go on a world tour in 2022 and 2023 and conclude in Abu Dhabi.

The Burj Al Arab show is another career highlight for Jafri who last year created the world’s largest painting on canvas, The Journey of Humanity. Later in 2022, he will partner with NASA CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) to place the first official artwork on the moon.

“In a world where the metaverse is becoming more of a reality, and where online and physical living is fully integrated, this project is about reconnecting humanity to the beauty that surrounds us by re-establishing links with our heritage and cultural history,” said Jafri. “The Art Maze will be a first-of-its-kind-concept where art meets architecture and technology.”
