UAE nurseries to close from Sunday March 1

UAE Ministry of Education issues precautionary new directives

The Ministry of Education has stated that all nurseries across Dubai and Abu Dhabi will be closed for two weeks starting from Sunday March 1. The directive is in relation to precautionary and preventative measures to reduce the possibility of transmission of the COVID-19 virus infection.

In further preventative measures, The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and ADEK (Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge) have also issued a mandate stating that all schools and universities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi should cancel all trips, sports fixtures, events, exchanges and presentations, as well as extra-curricular activities, rehearsals and practices. A Tweet posted by the KHDA on Saturday February 28 said: “To make sure everyone in Dubai stays safe, all internal and external gatherings at private schools and universities in Dubai have been cancelled. This includes camps, sports and trips. This is a precautionary action only. Safety is always our top priority.”

The news comes following an announcement made by private schools in Dubai asking parents to complete a form giving details of any travel to areas badly affects by COVID-19 including China, Iran and Italy. The request also asked parents to let the school know if they have had relatives visiting from any of the areas with the highest number of confirmed cases. In addition, ADEK has given schools across the capital a similar directive, and has also confirmed that nurseries will be closed from Sunday March 1 until further notice. A tweet from the Abu Dhabi’s education governing board (ADEK) posted on Saturday February 28 said: “As part of the precautionary measures to reduce the possibility of transmission of the COVID-19 virus infections, ADEK has requested the temporary suspensions of all nurseries in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as of Sunday March 1, 2020 and until further notice.”
