The Power of the Dog scores big at the Oscar nominations

Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench and Olivia Colman all pick up Academy Award nods

This year’s Oscar candidates have been unveiled and had plenty of good news for The Power of the Dog and Dune. Jane Campion’s neo-western picked up 12 nominations, including Best Picture, while Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic collected nods like a spice harvester – including Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Editing, among its ten nominations.

There was love, too, for Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, which was nominated in seven categories, and Adam McKay’s polarising client change satire Don’t Look Up. The Netflix film pulled in four nods, including Best Picture. It will be a major contender in that category, even if McKay missed out on a Best Director nod and Leonardo DiCaprio on an expected Best Actor nomination.

Will Smith’s twin roles in King Richard – as producer and lead – yielded Best Actor and Best Picture nominations. The Richard Williams biopic earned six nominations in total.

There was good news, too, for Kristen Stewart, nominated for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer, and for West Side Story. A frontrunner-turned-outsider-turned-frontrunner again, it was nominated for Best Picture and also scored Spielberg his eighth Best Director nomination, amongst its seven nominations.

Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car was rewarded with four nominations, including a surprise Best Picture nod and a predicted nomination for Best International Film.
