The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is set to start rolling out a protocol for convalescent plasma therapy this week, following Abu Dhabi.
The treatment uses blood plasma from those who have recovered from coronavirus in order to help treat serious cases across the UAE.
International doctors believe that the plasma of patients who have completely recovered from the disease is rich in antibodies that can help fight off the virus and when the plasma is injected into someone with COVID-19, their body will recognise the virus as something to attack.
The treatment will be implemented at DHA hospitals and private hospitals across Dubai and is an extremely vital step towards the treatment and prevention of the spread of coronavirus, says Dr. Younis Kazim, CEO of Dubai Healthcare Corporation at the DHA.
Protocols based on international standards for using convalescent plasma therapy have been put in place by specialised doctors from the DHA.
The doctors have also outlined rules and guidelines to specify who can make plasma donations and who is eligible to receive this treatment.
Kazim also stated that the DHA have decided to take carry out these treatments after international medical results found that once a person recovers from the virus, they develop antibodies that will stay in their blood to fight it off.
