Stunning new scenic art installation launched in Sharjah

The Swing is now open in the emirate

Sharjah’s beautiful skyline can now be admired from a fresh vantage point thanks to a stunning new art installation.

Al Noor Island, Sharjah’s eco-destination, has unveiled a particularly impressive perch from which to watch the world go by.

The Swing, a commissioned piece by Emirat artist Azza Al Qubaisi, is exactly what it sounds like – a large swing that allows visitors to take a seat and savour the vista of the Sharjah skyline.

The piece comprises seven pieces of steel with ghaf and palm tree leaves cut into the sides and, according to the artist, represents the anxious wait Emirati women had to endure waiting for their husbands to return from pearl harvests out in the ocean.

Reflecting on the UAE’s past and heritage, the installation is a place of reflection and offers expats and citizens a place to consider the strides the UAE has taken in the impressive past few decades.

“The Swing reflects the pre-oil time during the pearl harvest season, where women used to stand on the shore waiting for their husbands’ return in the anxiety of losing their spouses,” said Al Qubaisi.

“On the contrary, nowadays a family would enjoy togetherness on this extended swing, feeling safe overlooking the prosperity and development of Sharjah and the UAE.

“New and old materials were used to create the installation, representing the past and present. People can see palm and ghaf tree-inspired patterns with an abstract metal framework of palm branches, which reflects the theme.”
