You will soon need to be fully vaccinated to go to public places in Abu Dhabi

New regulations cover malls, restaurants, gyms and schools

You will need to be fully vaccinated to enter malls, restaurants, cafés and gyms in Abu Dhabi from Friday August 20, authorities have announced.

All other retail outlets, including those not within a shopping centre, except supermarkets and pharmacies, will also only be accessible for those who have had both doses of the jab.

The same goes for recreational facilities and sporting activities, health clubs, resorts, museums, cultural centres and theme parks, as well as universities, institutes, public and private schools and child nurseries across the emirate.

New protocols do not apply to those with vaccination exemption, nor to children 15 and under.

Residents and citizens were previously adhering to a six-category green pass system facilitated by the Alhosn app.

The Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee said: “The decision is part of proactive measures put in place by the emirate which also include pre-emptive testing campaigns in industrial areas and densely populated areas, the use of modern and innovative technologies to detect infection, and the ongoing vaccination campaign, including offering a booster dose to those eligible.”

The announcement comes in the same week Abu Dhabi authorities introduced high-tech scanners at locations across the emirate, including some residential areas and all ports of entry to quickly identify those carrying COVID-19.

The new scanners measure electromagnetic waves, which change when the RNA particles of the virus are present in the person’s body.

The test proved 93.5 percent accurate in a case study of more than 20,000 people.

Anyone flagged as a showing symptoms will need to take a PCR test within 24 hours.
