More than 200 sharks and rays are coming to The National Aquarium

The collection is the largest in the Middle East

Is anyone else hearing the Jaws theme song?

It might be because hundreds of sharks and rays are coming to The National Aquarium in Abu Dhabi.

The film industry might have given us the wrong impression of these apex predators (they aren’t nearly as deadly as they’ve been made out to be) and whether you love them or fear them, soon you’ll have the opportunity to see them like you never have before.

Located in the up and coming Al Qana district in Abu Dhabi, the National Aquarium will showcase a huge variety of shark and ray species when it opens its doors later this year. It is the largest aquarium in the region and houses more than 200 sharks and rays, representing 25 different species.

It’s also the only place in the UAE where you can see scalloped hammer head sharks and bull sharks. You’ll also be able to watch sand tiger sharks, lemon sharks, zebra sharks, black tip reef sharks, eagle rays, shovelnose rays, cownose rays, and freshwater rays, amongst others – not to mention hundreds of other species of marine life.

Shark numbers are dwindling due to overfishing, but the team at The National Aquarium is aiming to turn fear into fascination through an education programme that will help you understand these incredible predators.

Soon you’ll be able to watch divers interact with the sharks, witness feeding demonstrations, and even hand-feed sharks that are as long as two metres.

The National Aquarium is located at Al Qana in Abu Dhabi, and is set to be the largest aquarium in the Middle East and is home to 46,000 creatures spread across ten zones.

Al Qana is an up and coming development in Abu Dhabi, which will be home to the city’s largest cinema complex, a turtle rehabilitation centre, a lifestyle centre, running and cycling tracks, and more.

Al Qana is also bringing more than 95 new restaurants to Abu Dhabi, with international and home-grown brands to make an appearance.

Opening soon. The National Aquarium, Al Qana alqana.ae
