Abu Dhabi single-use plastic bags ban takes effect

The environmentally friendly initiative officially started on Wednesday June 1

Abu Dhabi single-use plastic bags has taken effect. The environmentally friendly initiative officially started on Wednesday June 1, 2022. The move is part of the UAE capital’s larger environmental initiatives, which include cutting down the overall use of plastics for a more eco-friendly future.

The single-use plastic bag ban was announced by the Abu Dhabi Media Office on Wednesday April 6, and is in line with Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi’s efforts to “reduce pollution and promote sustainability”. The announcement promises that “future measures will aim to further limit the consumption of single-use plastics products in the emirate”.

The announcement stated that Abu Dhabi is the first in the region to introduce an integrated, single-use plastic policy. As highlighted, the Abu Dhabi single-use plastic bags ban will be followed by additional measures to cut down on single-use plastic usage for a greener future. No specifics were announced at the time of writing.

The banning of single-use plastic bags in Abu Dhabi follows the capital’s integrated single-use plastic policy, which was introduced in 2020.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Dubai would start charging for single-use plastic bags. From July 1, 2022 it will cost 25 fils for a plastic bag – with the ultimate goal to completely pan single-use plastic in two years.

Dubai’s Executive Council said the charge will be applied in all stores, such as clothing stores, restaurants, delivery orders, textile stores, pharmacies and e-commerce orders.

The 25 fil cost will apply to any single-use plastic bags that are used for carrying goods and the goal is to encourage consumers to reduce plastic usage and consume more ethically.
