Saudi Arabia launches campaign to host Expo 2030 in Riyadh

The Kingdom is putting in a bid to host the world expo

It’s official: Saudi Arabia has launched a global campaign to host Expo 2030 in Riyadh.

As the curtain draws to a close on Expo 2020 in Dubai, all eyes are on future World Expos. Expo 2025 is being hosted in Osaka, Japan between April 13 and October 13, 2025 in the Osaka-Kansai region. The theme will be “Designing Future Societies for Our Lives”. However, the country hosting Expo 2030 is still to be decided, and there’s a chance that Expo 2030 might be coming to the Kingdom.

Want to know what will happen for Expo 2030? Saudi Arabia’s campaign to bid for Expo 2030 was officially launched on Monday March 28 at the closing ceremony for the Saudi pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.

In October 2021, Saudi Arabia announced Riyadh’s bid for hosting the World Expo 2030 under the theme “The era of change: Leading the planet to a foresighted tomorrow”.

His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, says: “We live in an era of change, and we face an unprecedented need for humanity’s collective action. It is clear that the whole world, as a collective, needs to work together to foresee the future and address, with its brightest minds, the challenges and opportunities that emanate from this change. The 2030 World Expo in Riyadh will coincide with the culmination of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.”

Dubai was the first Middle Eastern city to host the World Expo, and we’re hoping that Riyadh can be the second.

Saudi Arabia had the second-largest pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai: it also won the best pavilion and received two honorary awards.

That’s not all though, the pavilion nabbed three Guinness World Records: the largest interactive lighting floor with 8,000 LED lights, the longest interactive water feature at 32 metres, and the largest LED interactive digital mirror screen at 1,302.5 square metres. And hopefully this is just a start of exciting things to come.

We can’t wait to see what happens next. Stay tuned to Time Out for the latest updates on anything and everything Riyadh.
