Plant-based meatballs from IKEA, vegan McDonald’s and more

All the latest vegan news in the UAE

Globally, veganism is on the rise and it’s no different here in the UAE, which is seeing plant-based dining becoming increasingly popular.

And in the latest vegan news, plant-based meatballs have finally arrived at IKEA, the McPlant burger is on the horizon and Subway is trialling two brand-new meat-free subs at selected branches across Dubai.

The McPlant burger at McDonald’s

American fast-food chain McDonald’s is the latest fast-food brand to launch plant-based burgers– but you’ll have to wait until 2021 until you can get your chops around them. McDonald’s is teaming up with Beyond Meat (a faux-meat made from pea protein and potato starch) for the McPlant range which will include burgers, chicken substitutes, and breakfast sandwiches. The launch date has yet to be revealed but you can keep your eyes peeled here for updates. Bring on the McPlant Big Mac, we say.

Plant-based meatballs at IKEA

In September we announced that IKEA in the UAE was planning on adding vegan meatballs to its menu and guess what vegans of the UAE? The glorious day has finally come. Made from yellow pea protein, oats, apples, onions and potatoes, the vegan-friendly meatballs are now available across the UAE. The ‘plant ball’ has only four percent of the climate footprint of the traditional meatball offering a more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to hungry shoppers and meatball fans. As if we need an excuse to go to IKEA…
