Abu Dhabi is full of amazing natural scenery and the fossil dunes are up there with the best.

What are they?
Abu Dhabi’s Fossil Dunes are completely natural and were created by a mix of wind, sand and time.
The formations are made by wind-swept sand that when permeated with calcium carbonate start to harden and form distinct, varied and abstract structures.
Each Fossil Dune will change over time and no two formations are ever the same.
Can you climb them?
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCE) ask all visitors to not touch or disturb the structures.
However, if you’ve seen the structures on Instagram you’ll know that many visitors do not follow the instructions and climb on top for pictures.
Although they seem stable, the fossil dunes are fragile and can crack, break and collapse if disturbed.
If you’re going to visit please be responsible, look and don’t touch, both to preserve these natural wonders and to avoid injury.
How do you get there?
The Fossil Dunes are located approximately 70km south on Abu Dhabi Island, beyond Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City on the Al Ain Truck Road (E30).
Then head south of Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and use a map mobile application to find the site.
A 4×4 is recommended or you can park and walk to the site.
Coordinates to type in are 24°10’16.4″N 54°34’39.1″E.
When can you visit?
The site is always open but due to the lack of shade it’s best visited from October to February.
How much does it cost?
Visiting the site is completely free but all visitors are asked to be responsible and not cause any damage or leave litter on the site.
Treat the site with respect and it will be there to enjoy for many years to come and for many others to explore themselves.
