25 things to do this week

Charity golf, Emirati film, brunch on a boat and more Dhabi fun

Thursday 8

Party with DJ Rabih: After a month of slumber, The Yacht Club’s perpetually popular resident DJ is back. Along with his arsenal of bangin’ house tracks, the long-suffering decksmith will also be packing a live saxophonist and a pair of dancers into his vinyl bag for tonight’s set.
Free. From 10pm. The Yacht Club, InterContinental Abu Dhabi (02 666 6888)

See an Emirati film – for free: Set in Dubai and telling the story of three young peoples’ intertwining lives, City of Life is one of very few UAE-made films to grab the world’s attention. Yet to catch Ali F Mostafa’s acclaimed drama? It’s being screened at New York University’s Abu Dhabi campus tonight – and you can go along for free.
7pm. Register at nyuad.nyu.edu

Celebrate the end of summer: The good folks over at the Captain’s Arms think going back to school is a reason for a celebration. We never really felt that way, but we’ll take any excuse to party. With live music outside in the garden.
From 6pm, The Captain’s Arms, Le Méridien (02 644 6666).

Take mum out for free: You’ve had a long day, the kids are whining and the husband is hungry, and you really don’t feel like cooking. The solution: head to Amalfi at Le Royal Méridien tonight; mum’s dinner is free. Amalfi, Le Royal Méridien (02 674 2020)

Friday 9

Make some Trouble: Musical duo Trouble are back from their tour around Europe and the Middle East, and will be performing at The Tavern six nights a week. Their repertoire ranges from ’60s classics to current tracks, so they’re guaranteed to have something for everyone.
The Tavern, Sheraton hotel (02 677 3333)

Run for karma: Do your bit for the world and get fit at the same time by participating in the Aloft-Adnec charity run. Wether you’re an experienced runner, a beginner or you want to bring the kids, everyone can participate.
From 8am. From Dhs150, free for kids under 12, contact Aloft Abu Dhabi (026545000)

Watch the World Cup: Rugby fans will want to head to NRG Café tonight, where the kick-off of the 2011 Rugby World Cup is being broadcast live on big screens. Kiwi-style drinks and snacks are available to help you get in the mood.
NRG Sports Cafe, Le Méridien, (02 644 6666)

Brunch on a boat: Fancy checking out a Friday feast with a difference? Shuja Yacht’s grub may not be as good as that you’ll sample on dry land, but the stunning views of the Corniche and ocean breezes more than make up for it.
Dhs215 (02 674 2020)

Saturday 10

Gorge on ribs: While its Tuesday night bottomless mussels bonanza draws a big crowd, Belgian Café’s Saturday night ribs deal remains a relatively untapped resource. Simply grab the weekend papers, put on an old shirt (it’ll be a state by the end of the evening, we promise) and join the meat-fest.
Dhs160. InterContinental Abu Dhabi (02 666 6888)

Cut costs on cutlery: Today is the last day of @Home’s spend and save sale on utensils and cutlery, so if you still really need some knives, a frying pan or an egg timer, head to Al Wahda Mall while you still can for some great discounts.
@Home, Al Wahda Mall (02 443 7185)

Golf for charity: You should do your bit for charity, but you’d rather fill your spare time playing golf. We get it. Today is your chance to improve that karma, though, when Abu Dhabi Golf Club hosts the Somalia Night Golf Fundraiser. Nine holes of team power play, with the proceeds going to charity.
7pm. Dhs95 for members, Dhs275 for visitors. Abu Dhabi Golf Club (02 558 8990)

Teach the kids to sing: If your little one is an aspiring performer, enroll him or her in The Club’s new musical theatre classes every Saturday to cultivate those talents. 10am. Ages eight and over. Dhs250 for 14 weeks for junior members.
The Club (02 673 1111)

Escape to a desert paradise: Qasr Al Sarab resort has to be seen to be believed, and until the end of October you can take advantage of a stay three pay two offer that includes breakfast.
From Dhs933 per room. Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort (02 886 2088)

See F1 hit Italy: Though Sebastian Vettel’s got this year’s championship pretty much sewn up, we’re still in for plenty of action when Formula One arrives in Monza this week. It’s the fastest track on the calendar, so look out for some slick overtaking manoeuvres along those long straights.
4pm. AD Sports

Have a slice or 10: If the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles taught us anything, it’s that scoffing pizza is the surest path to becoming completely bodacious. Get your fill of gooey cheese-topped goods at Amalfi tonight, where you can eat as much as you like for Dhs150.
Le Royal Méridien (02 674 2020)

See a new art show: The Yas Hotel is slowly building itself a reputation as one of the best art venues in the city. The latest in its series of Crossroads shows opens this week, showcasing the colourful work of Emirati painter Abdul Rauf Khalfan.
Free. Until November 5. The Yas Hotel (02 656 0000)

Monday 12

Sell your stuff: Booking is now open for the Sheraton Abu Dhabi’s first indoor second-hand bazaar (Saturday, September 17), part of the Road to Awareness 2011 fundraising initiative to raise just under a million Dirhams ($250,000) for Unicef’s education programmes in Pakistan and Romania.
Dhs250 for one table with two chairs. Contact Martina Venus on (02 697 0257)

Eat like a samurai: Sick of the measly portions of sushi on offer at your local Japanese restaurant? Well, tonight at The Grille you can eat as much fish and rice as you like for an entirely reasonable Dhs135, or Dhs40 for your hungry offspring.
Abu Dhabi Golf Club (02 558 8990)

Check out some new shoes: Vincci’s Autumn/winter collection is in store now – think nude tones, lace and girly ribbons. The perfect reason to treat your feet.
Vincci, Marina Mall (02 681 8744)

Win a pen: Have dinner at Beach Rotana’s Finz, Rodeo Grill or Indigo, and you could win yourself a shiny new Montblanc pen.
Beach Rotana (02 697 9011)

Tuesday 13

Be a know-it-all: Take along a group of friends and test your trivia knowledge at one of Abu Dhabi’s famous quiz nights. This one is held at Qanas at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, and promises some great prizes to be won. Maximum six people per team.
Abu Dhabi Golf Club (02 558 8990)

Drink for nothing: Providing you smell nice, own two X chromosomes and can recount on demand the plotline of any given episode of Sex and the City, head down to Hemingway’s tonight and you can help yourself to as much as you want from the bar between 7pm and 9pm.
Hilton Abu Dhabi (02 681 1900)

Get a new look: New Look has opened at Mushrif Mall. Pick up some statement pieces and wardrobe staples at a bargain price.

Look at horses: Today is the first day of ADIHEX – the Abu Dhabi Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition. Into stallions, falcons and vaguely ridiculous hats? Get along to Adnec and check it out.
Until Saturday www.adihex.net

Eat your weight in seafood: Head down to The Club tonight and take a stab at the new Seafood Indulgence buffet including steamed black mussels, oysters, warm baked crab mornay, lobster thermidor, fillet of turbot and seafood paella, as well as a live sushi and sashimi station, plenty of appetisers and a solid selection of desserts.
Dhs125 for adults, Dhs60 for children under 12. 6pm-10.30pm. The Club (02 673 1111)

Have a happy hour: C.Mondo at Centro Yas Island has launched a new happy hour. Every night between 6pm and 9pm you can bag a selected beverage for the bargain price of Dhs15.
