Online carpooling portal created ahead of Abu Dhabi road tolls launch

The public transport network has had another upgrade

The Abu Dhabi road tolls are set to begin a trial period from October 15 to January 1 when the tolls will be activated

Helping residents to get around the city a new online service has been launched to help you plan your route and the best possible way to get to your destination.

Darb, by the Department of Transport, is a new online portal that allows you to see all available bus routes and register an account to find others to carpool with.

The new system allows a motorist who usually travels alone to carpool with a maximum of four passengers.

Passengers who don’t own a vehicle can sign up to the free service to ‘search for a ride’ and drivers are also able to search for passengers to reduce the number of vehicles on the road during peak hours.

Drivers will not be permitted to charge passengers for the ride but can ask for passengers to share the cost of fuel and parking expenses.

Members of the system will be able to create their own groups and companies can also set up groups to offer staff to use carpooling services when travelling to work.

The website, which isn’t fully functional just yet, is the only permitted portal to organise carpooling in the city.

Drivers who are carpooling that aren’t registered through the Department of Transport’s system can face a fine of Dhs3,000, 24 black points and have their vehicle impounded.

In addition a number of new bus routes and fare discounts have been introduced to encourage the public to make use of the public transport system in the capital.

Last week a number of new services started in Mussafah, Mohamed Bin Zayed City, Khalifa City and other residential areas.

You will now also be able to make two transfers between buses without paying an additional fee.

The Dhs2 boarding fee and cost of 5 fils per kilometre will remain the same but you can now transfer buses twice without facing any additional charges.
