Birdy
3/5
This debut album by Birdy might be a tasteful covers album by a prodigious talent, but it essentially renders her the indie Dionne Bromfield. Songs that get her floaty vocals and piano reworking include Phoenix’s ‘1901’, ‘Shelter’ by The XX – robbed of its atmospherics to become a tinkly piano wail – and a nicely slow-burning take on The Naked And Famous’s ‘Young Blood’. Birdy’s one selfpenned composition sits comfortably with the other material. So why not just wait until she’s ready to release an album proper?
