How to get what you want

Law of attraction expert Lucy Mackintosh changes lives

Lucy Mackintosh says she has everything she wants. ‘I’ve attracted my ideal partner, I have supportive friends, lots of clients, venues at great prices, free dinners at my favourite restaurants, my ideal weight, and the list goes on.’ Luck? Apparently not. Lucy puts it all down to the law of attraction, a philosophy based on best-selling self-help book The Secret. Her workshop this month will help you put the theory into practice.

So, how does the law of attraction work?
In a nutshell, we and everything around us is made up of energy. Our energy field changes based on our thoughts and feelings, and we attract anything (people, things, events) that vibrates at the same frequency. Therefore, if we are positive we are giving out positive vibrations, and we will attract positive people and circumstances to us. The same is also true for negative thoughts and feelings, which attract negativity into our lives. All the major religions have teachings linked to the law of attraction. For example, the idea of prayer, gratitude and asking for what you want.

Can you tell us a bit about The Secret?
The Secret was published in 2006 and has sold millions of copies across the world. The secret is the law of attraction, and it has become so popular because it introduced this spiritual law into mainstream culture. It explains, simply, that we all have the power to get what we want and achieve our dreams. However, this is only the beginning, and I teach in my workshops how to put the theory into practice and how we can use the law of attraction to be whoever we want to be and achieve inner peace and harmony as well as material possessions.

But isn’t it possible to devote time and energy to something and not succeed?
If you devote time and energy to something and don’t succeed, it doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. Remember, Thomas Edison ‘failed’ 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. Or perhaps it’s the universe telling you that you should be doing something else.

Can you give us some examples of how the law of attraction can be put into practice?
A vision board is useful – it involves sticking images and words of what you want to attract on to a sheet of paper and putting it where you see it frequently. Saying or reading positive statements about what you want to attract, or meditating on what you want. I give people tools that are easy, enjoyable and are quick to use because we are all busy people.

Are there any common goals you’ve noticed people struggling to achieve that are specific to life in the UAE?
Common challenges I have seen in the UAE are finding a partner (my Attract Your Soulmate course is always full) and finding good friendships, as the UAE is a transient place. People also like to come to the workshops to meet like-minded people. The workshops really do attract every type of person – men and women from their twenties to their sixties, UAE Nationals and expats from every country, from housewives to business executives.

What should people expect from the workshop?
I make the workshop interactive as people are more likely to understand and remember information if they are involved. So I include thought-provoking exercises for the individual, exercises in pairs and discussions in small groups. People can expect to have a fun and exciting afternoon that has the potential to change their lives.
