Abu Dhabi room rates on the slide

Capital falls from second to eighth in list of world’s most expensive cities

With extortionate rent costs, rises in fuel prices and even a latte setting you back a hefty sum, we all know Abu Dhabi’s an expensive place to live. But it’s also a costly place for visitors to stay, with some of the highest hotel room rates on the planet.

New figures show that Abu Dhabi is currently the eighth most expensive city in the world, with an average price of Dhs1,041 a night.

The good news for tourists is that hotel costs have fallen 25 per cent in the last year. In 2009, Abu Dhabi ranked second in the world, with an average price of Dhs1,385 per night, with only Moscow having higher rates. In the 2010 survey, compiled by travel company Hogg Robinson Group, Moscow is still tops, followed by Geneva, Hong Kong, Paris, New York, Washington DC, Zurich, then Abu Dhabi, Stockholm and Oslo.

Nine new hotels have opened in Abu Dhabi during the past year and many more are due to be launched soon, meaning prices could fall even further. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that house rental prices follow a similar trend.
