Iftar for cabs

Hotels ensure that the cabbies don’t go hungry

Life’s all about being in the right place at the right time in Abu Dhabi, and for famished cabbies, that sweet spot was at the entrances of numerous hotels yesterday evening.

The hungry taxi drivers got an unexpected refuel when presented with fast-breaking food packs from Le Royal Méridien, Aloft and other venues taking part in the ‘Iftar for Cabs’ initiative. Many drivers don’t get a chance to take a break as the sun goes down, so hotel staff handed out the boxes of grub in a gesture of thanks, as taxis passed through to collect their guests.

‘The purpose of the initiative is to give a little something back to cab drivers, who are always on the go and can struggle to find time to break their fast during Ramadan,’ said Guido De Wilde, Vice President & Regional Director of the Starwood Middle East hotel group.

Abu Dhabi’s finest have also been getting into the Ramadan kareem spirit this week. To the initial panic of motorists, police have been randomly pulling over cars at sunset but dishing out meal boxes rather than tickings-off. They plan to continue the scheme throughout the month of Ramadan.
