Abu Dhabi lands world record for largest mosaic made from recyclable materials

The huge artwork at Masdar City celebrates the UAE

Abu Dhabi and the UAE have achieved a lot of world records in recent years.

From the largest gathering of people dressed in capes to record-breaking attractions and experiences.

Now, Masdar City has achieved a new Guinness World Record for making the largest mosaic made from recycled materials.

The huge mosaic, which is 1,105 square metres, took one moth to construct with help from Masdar City employees, local residents and schoolchildren.

It’s made from a total of 90,500 recycled items including plastic bottles, cans and cardboard.

The mosaic has been made ahead of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and aims to encourage people in Abu Dhabi to be more responsible with recycling.

The artwork depicts the evolution of the UAE from its origins to the future with key landmarks from all seven emirates included.

“As a pioneer in sustainable urban community development, Masdar City will continue to lead in promoting best practice in waste management,” said Yousef Baselaib, executive director, Sustainable Real Estate at Masdar.

“This wonderful mosaic makes the sustainability debate more tangible and accessible through the universal medium of art, and demonstrates the commitment of the people of the UAE to protecting the environment.

“Sustainability requires everyone to play their part and engaging the local community is an essential element of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.”
