The ITU World Triathlon Series is coming back to Abu Dhabi in March

Yas Island will host the event once again

Another world-class sporting event is returning to Abu Dhabi this year.

The ITU World Triathlon Series will return to Abu Dhabi from March 5 to 7 on Yas Island.

A total of 3,000 participants are expected to take part, including 110 of the world’s elite triathletes, who will be looking to secure qualifying points ahead of the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.

The ITU World Triathlons in Abu Dhabi have attracted some of the biggest names in the sport in recent years including Olympic champions the Brownlee brothers.

This year will also see the Para Triathlon World Cup held at the event where elite para-athletes will also compete for qualification points for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Amateur triathletes can also sign up and take part in the event across a range of age groups and distances.

“Abu Dhabi is an incredible location for hosting a triathlon of this magnitude, with Yas Island offering something for everyone – from elite athletes to those trying out the sport for the first time,” said Gary Marescia, event director of the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi.

“We are working hard to ensure we take the sport to a wide range of audiences, which is why we have introduced duathlon race categories this year – a great first step into the sport for those who might want to get a taste.

“The event continues to evolve and grow on so many levels, and we can’t wait to welcome participants and spectators from around the world to experience the best of Abu Dhabi once again.”

The UAE capital is also host the 2022 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, the biggest event in the sport’s calendar.
