Terry Edwards music review

Mobius strip of a concept album dedicated to the late Alex Chilton

Clichés
3/5

A Möbius strip of a concept album, in that it’s dedicated to the late Alex Chilton, who recorded a covers LP of the same name in 1993, which included four standards by Chet Baker who in 1970 recorded the Boxtops hit ‘The Letter’ (as, of course, sung by Chilton). It’s also a striking departure for Edwards. Best known for his sax and trumpet skills (lent to Tindersticks and Spiritualized among many others), here he relies (mostly) on acoustic guitar and his surprisingly adaptable voice on 12 heartfelt covers, including a deftly finger-picked ‘You Won’t See Me’.
