Meet four REAL Abu Dhabi heroes

We met four community heroes who’ve been honoured by a new project

Playing their part

67 Inspiring Stories is packed full of tales of generosity, caring and general good will. We spoke to some of those who have shared their story to find out what drives them to do good in Abu Dhabi’s community and beyond.

Michael Del Moro Manlogon

(Spearheading a can collection drive in the UAE)
The book is all about inspiration, so what inspired your cause?
As an individual and environmentalist, I always think of how can I be a responsible citizen in helping our environment, by reducing the waste that we are throwing in the landfill, and the can collection drive is the best way to encourage individuals to start segregating their cans and not to put them in the trash.

What is so important to you about helping the community?
To also help those in poverty and I believe the best way to fight poverty is education.

Maryiam Baniyas
(A volunteer with voluntary organisation Takatof)
What have you gotten out of helping others?
A sense of pride and it encouraged me to pursue volunteering work. I considered it a starting point in giving back to the community in a meaningful way.

What advice would you have for anybody who wants to help in their local community?
Giving back to your community is an important way of expressing humility, kindness, love and gratitude for all that you have been given in your life. I advise everyone to contribute in helping the community as it allows [you to] make it a better place.

Rasha Ahmed Ali Abd Rabu
(Graduate who developed a process for converting waste into biodiesel)
Why’s it important to contribute to a community?
I’m a firm believer in giving back. This contribution gives a sense of togetherness, belonging and a feeling of association. Contributing ensures a well-supported community that’ll stick together.

What advice do you have for others?
Don’t let anything hold you back. Just do it. Look at organisations around you that support community work. If you don’t find one, start one.

Salwa Al Hammadi
(Runs an animal shelter for cats)
Tell us your story
My role is to help sick, injured or orphaned cats [which] also gives a boost to my self-esteem, and self confidence since I’m doing good for poor animals who have the same right to live and enjoy life just as much as a human being. My role also gives me a sense of accomplishment when I see injured animals [nursed] back to life.

What inspired your cause?
I found my inspiration in Mother Teresa who urged [us] to serve [our] community with mercy and love the unwanted, the unloved, dying and abandoned [and] all who have lost hope and faith.
