New Dubai plastic bag charge to start in July

The new cost will help the emirate move towards a complete ban in two years

A new Dubai plastic bag charge will see single-use plastic bags cost 25 fils from Friday July 1 – with the ultimate goal to completely pan single-use plastic in two years.

The emirate’s Executive Council said the charge will be applied in all stores, such as clothing stores, restaurants, delivery orders, textile stores, pharmacies and e-commerce orders.

The 25 fil cost will apply to any single-use plastic bags that are used for carrying goods.

The goal is to encourage everyone to reduce their excessive use of plastics and consume more ethically.

The plastic bag cost in Dubai will be evaluated in stages before single-use plastic bags are banned completely in two years’ time.

It takes 400 years for a plastic bag to decompose in the environment, and thousands of years for the negative environmental impact to be mitigated. Additionally, 86 percent of dead turtles found in the UAE have consumed plastic, and 50 percent of camel deaths are caused by plastic bag consumption.

The new plastic bag cost in Dubai is another step towards a more eco-friendly future.

As of this writing, no new announcements have been made for other emirates in the United Arab Emirates. Watch this space for more details on the new environmental initiative.
