The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) Abu Dhabi has recently announced new rules for scooters and bikes in Abu Dhabi to keep riders and pedestrians safe.

What kind of scooters can I ride?

The most recent change has been that scooters with seats are now banned in Abu Dhabi. According to a video on the ITC Instagram account, Abu Dhabi scooter and bike rules have changed and you are no longer allowed to ride seated scooters.

Bicycles, electronic bicycles, regular scooters and electronic scooters are still allowed. However, if your scooter has a seat attached or built in you cannot ride it in Abu Dhabi. This rule will be enforced with fines between Dhs200 and Dhs500.

Where can I ride my scooter or bike in Abu Dhabi?

Scooters and bikes in Abu Dhabi are not allowed on main roads and highways. You cannot ride your scooter or bike on the sidewalk unless it is approved by ITC. Scooters and bikes should be ridden on bike lanes. If there are no bikes lanes where you want to ride, you must use side-roads where the speed limit is typically 20 kilometers per hour. It is also prohibited to travel in the opposite direction of the road under any circumstances.

If you’re going to ride scooters and bikes in Abu Dhabi you should make sure you have all the correct protective gear including a helmet, knee bumpers and reflective clothing if you’re riding at night.

Scooter riders should give priority to vehicular traffic at intersections, reduce speed around pedestrians and maintain a good safety distance from other bikes, scooters and pedestrians.
