Right in the middle of the pandemic, a hugely ambitious new bus route was planned that would span entire continents. Dubbed the ‘Bus to London’, the single coach would travel the 20,000 kilometres between Delhi and London, passing through 18 countries in 70 days.
The brainchild of Indian travel company Adventures Overland, the project was inspired by the ‘hippie trail’ of the mid-twentieth century, which saw huge numbers of travellers dropping out of Western society to travel overland from Europe to India. The full one-way itinerary was set to include guides, tours, hotel stays, visa fees and snacks.
The ‘Bus to London’ (which will actually run both ways) was eventually delayed by the pandemic, but we’ve got good news: it’s now scheduled to launch in April 2023. The reason it hasn’t launched sooner is because, while most countries are now open to tourists, China – a pretty vital part of the route – is not.
While we might have to wait just a little longer for the India-UK intercontinental bus, in the meantime, the same organisers have announced a ‘Road to London’ trip. Rather than a bus, this tour features a convoy of ten cars driving from Bandar Abbas in Iran to London. Leaving on August 14, it’ll pass through 20 countries in 55 days and cover a whopping 15,000 kilometres.
