District 2020 to become Expo City Dubai

The Expo 2020 site was set to make a comeback as District 2020 but now it will be known as Expo City Dubai

After Expo closed on March 31 there were plans for ‘the greatest show on earth’s’ legacy to live on as District 2020.

Billed as a community with residential areas, work-spaces, and cultural neighbourhoods, Expo 2020 fans were excited that the area was going to last forever.

Today (Monday June 20) during a press conference at the Dubai Exhibition Centre it was announced that the Expo 2020 site will not be renamed District 2020 but instead will be known as Expo City Dubai.

The initial plans for Expo City are still the same as they were for District 2020 – making the expansive Expo 2020 site, a smart city to improve the lives of those who live there.

80 per cent of the Expo-built infrastructure will be retained as the site becomes Expo City Dubai.

Other highlights are that Expo City Dubai hopes to be a clean, green and tech-enabled city of the future built around sustainability.

Expo City 2020 – which will open in September 2022 – sounds pretty impressive.

The plot will have an array of diverse attractions, and will be the largest space in the world to be fully covered by a 5G-enabled network.

We love that several of Expo 2020’s flagship pavilions will have a permanent home at Expo City Dubai.

Keen to know which? The UAE Pavilion, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion, Woman’s Pavilion, Vision Pavilion, Alif – the Mobility Pavilion and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion will remain.

Other iconic attractions staying, which we expect will excite many, are Al Wasl Plaza, the Garden in the Sky observation tower and the surreal water feature. Pretty cool.

The Opportunity Pavilion is also set to make a comeback but will be changed into the Expo 2020 Dubai Museum which we are told will take visitors behind the scenes of the Expo 2020.

After Expo City Dubai opens, the attractions will do so in phases and there will be entry fees for each pavilion. Stay tuned to Time Out to find out more about pricing when it is unveiled.

Wondering which country pavilions will remain? Several are sticking around including reworked versions of Luxembourg, Australia, Pakistan, India, Morocco and Egypt.

Is your favourite pavilion going to be at Expo City Dubai? A new and exciting exhibition will also star called Stories of Nations. We cannot wait to check that out.

Foodies will be pleased to know that there are also plans for many of the food and beverage vendors who set up shop at Expo 2020 to be present at Expo City Dubai. Of course, we will be keeping an eye on updates about this.

Excited for the next chapter as Expo 2020 becomes Expo City Dubai?
