Front Row MENA to screen I Am Not Your Negro for free

Cinema Akil to also show special free-of-charge screenings in Duba

In support of the black community Front Row MENA will be showcasing free screenings of award-winning documentary I Am Not Your Negro.

The documentary will be free on all major MENA on-demand platforms, including BEIN, OSN, Etisalat’s E-Life, Du, Vodafone, Ooredoo, and Omantel. The film will be available to watch for free from Thursday June 11 until Wednesday June 17 on all channels.

Front Row has also partnered up with Cinema Akil to show free screenings of the movie completely open to the public.

The Dubai indie cinema in Alserkal Avenue will show the screenings on Friday June 12 and Saturday June 13 from 4pm.

The documentary tells the story of race in America, based upon an unfinished novel Remember This House by writer James Baldwin – with other works including If Beale Street Could Talk and Go Tell It On The Mountain.

Only 30 pages of the book were complete before Baldwin’s death in 1987, which was a personal account of the lives of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. The movies sees director Raoul Peck visualise the book on screen, with an in-depth look at how these three men bravely spoke out against inequality.

The 2017 documentary was nominated for best documentary feature at the Oscars, while winning the BAFTA award and many others for the same.

“As most documentaries, I Am Not Your Negro received limited theatrical exposure in our territories and was well received in Festivals, on Digital and OnDemand as well as on Pay TV. However, given the times, we feel it is essential that everyone has the chance to see this important film and really think about what it requires to bring change,” Front Row CEO Gianluca Chakra.

“We do require deep introspection on the issue of racism and how some of our black and brown communities are affected by it in our region. This is not strictly an American problem, it is everywhere.”
