World Cup TV refund possible

Ministry of Economy officials investigating Al Jazeera TV blackouts

Ministry of Economy officials are examining the possibility of seeking refunds for UAE customers hit by the Al Jazeera Sport World Cup TV blackouts.

Ministry officials met with Al Jazeera Sport representatives on Sunday to discuss the possibility of recovering the value of the viewing cards needed to watch all World Cup matches, Arabic daily Al-Ittihad reported on Monday.

According to Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, director of Consumer Protection in the Ministry, UAE consumers were entitled to refunds because of the technical problems experienced during the first two days of the World Cup coverage.

Nuaimi told the paper: “The service provider is committed to ensuring quality,” adding that Article 33 of the regulation guaranteed to consumers that services must meet certain standards.

He said that the ministry had received a number of complaints about the poor service provided during the World Cup by the service provider, adding that the service provider should take responsibility.
