Abu Dhabi F1 track under review

FIA to look into increasing overtaking opportunities

The governing body of world motor sports, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, has promised to review all the current F1 circuits to make overtaking easier for drivers.

The move follows last year’s F1 finale at Yas Marina Circuit when champion Sebastian Vettel led the race from flag to finish, with many of his competitors claiming the track’s layout made passing manoeuvres extremely difficult.

Many of the new circuits around the globe – including those in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, South Korea and Singapore – have been designed by German engineer Hermann Tilke, and almost all of these have attracted criticism because overtaking is too hard on them. The FIA has announced that ‘the Circuit Design Group is examining grand prix circuits to identify the possibility of increasing the opportunities for overtaking.’

This follows comments from the FIA president, Jean Todt, who said that ‘we need to favour overtaking’ and that it had been ‘impossible’ in last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
