Tips for practising yoga at home

There’s no reason to stop your home workouts now

If you’re still wary of leaving the house but want to continue to practice yoga, then that’s still possible. And, if you’re lucky enough to have extra space, you can boost your domestic practice in a number of ways.

Here, Aoife McHugh (who’s also a qualified yoga teacher) talks you through three ways to improve your home yoga sessions.

Set up a special place

Create a precious place where mind and body can embrace. If you are making a cosy corner in your living room, you could use a room divider to separate it from the rest of the space. Avoid harsh light, add some candles for ambience and a floral arrangement to connect to nature. Aromatherapy spray or an air diffuser can also serve to create a suitably serene mood.

Choose your mat mindfully

If you are in the market for a new mat, do your research to find out what works best for you. Some have extra thickness if you have sensitive knees or enhanced grip to avoid any slip. The latter is important if you are engaging in power practice where sweat can be treacherous. Other mats have alignment guides to ensure you position your body in the right place. Just like Aladdin when he mounts his carpet, within the boundaries of your mat, magical things can occur. Do your research and find the best foundation for you.

Find your virtual virtuoso

There are a plethora of practitioners to be found online, choose one that makes your soul shine.
