Zen the Spa – tried & tested

We tried the Ultimate Facial Treatment at this Beach Rotana spa

The promise
A 90 minute intensive facial using state-of-the-art micro-current technology, personalised for your skin type and sensitivity.

The experience
We’re welcomed by two very friendly women who show us to the waiting area, where we relax on reclining lounges, enjoy a pre-treatment glass of water and flip through a magazine. The staff informed us to arrive early and we’re happy we did because these few minutes decompressing in the waiting area are almost as lovely as we expect the treatment to be.

The spa is dimly lit with soft music and a not-too-strong, clean, calming floral aroma. All of the staff speak softly and sweetly. The environment is exactly what we’re looking for in a spa.

Soon we’re whisked away to the treatment room where the technician welcomes us and spends five minutes explaining the treatment and assessing our skin type and our goals for the treatment. Our dry, somewhat spotted skin can be sensitive so we would rather try a clearing treatment than anti-ageing, and the technician understands, explaining exactly what she plans to do to help us.

The treatment starts with a gentle, moisturising massage that hydrates our face and leaves our neck and shoulders relaxed and comfortable as we settle in for the 90 minute experience.

Soon the technician begins the main element of the treatment. Using a metal tool with two large massaging prongs she stimulates and massages our face. The micro-current is so micro that we can only feel a cool and gentle kneading all over our chin and cheeks – our particularly troublesome areas.

Our specialist continues the refreshing treatment, checking in every few minutes to see how we feel with the pressure but also with the volume of the music and temperature of the room. As we start to calm even more and our body temperature drops, she wraps us lightly in a warmed blanket to keep us cosy and comfy.

Towards the end of the treatment, the technician begins to zap our spots with a small tool. This part feels like a small pinch each time, though it doesn’t hurt. We can feel our skin clearing already.

The treatment ends with a masque, and then a final moisturising massage of the face, head and neck. We leave feeling refreshed and clean.

The results
The experience is intensely relaxing and the gentle treatment leaves us feeling fresh-faced and glowing, like we’ve really done something good for ourselves.

Pros
The length of the treatment makes us feel completely rejuvenated and the technology is impressive.

Cons
The noise of the zapper is slightly distracting when you’re trying to find your zen, but it only lasts for a few minutes of the treatment.
