Mums aren’t just mums, they are drivers, cooks, cleaners, teachers, nurses and so much more. So, it’s not really a surprise that busy mums struggle to fit in lengthy pampering sessions.

But even though time may be something mums don’t have much of, there are still some top tips they should follow to ensure they look as amazing on the outside as they are on the inside.

Consultant dermatologist at Snö Bodyworx, Dr Thomas Berger, shares his expert advice and top tips for keeping skin looking healthier and younger whether you’re a mum in your twenties, thirties or forties.

Mums in their twenties

The aim: Prevention.
Overview: It’s important that you don’t smoke and don’t overexpose your skin to the sun. Now is the time to get into a good skincare routine using good cleansers, moisturisers and sunscreen. A lot of people in their twenties have a bit of acne, so be sure to treat that properly to prevent scars, you can do this by having regular professional facials.

Recommended action: The HydraFacial is a hydrating facial that is a firm favourite with our clients. This facial, loved worldwide by celebrities, removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities while simultaneously bathing the new skin with cleansing, hydrating and moisturising serums.

Mums in their thirties

The aim: Maintenance.
Overview: Most people don’t need anything drastic. Apart from leading a healthy lifestyle, start using topical retinoids or similar products to prevent fine lines and skin discoloration.

Recommended action: Your early thirties is a good time to start hydrating treatments as skin begins to dry out more easily leading to deeper lines later in life. Consider a mild resurfacing of the skin with facial peels that even the skin tone, reduce pigmentation, diminish enlarged pores and stimulate collagen production.

Mums in their forties

The aim: Treatment is often needed.
Overview: Many people in their forties develop signs of sun damage. Sun spots can be removed by pigment lasers, while deeper lines can be improved by fractional lasers. Also, one of the main concern is a certain degree of skin sagging.

Recommended action: The Exilis Elite is a non-invasive face and body contouring device designed to tighten the skin while reducing fat and signs of fine lines and wrinkles. It represents a wide range of non-invasive procedures treating both skin and fat on the whole body – from head to toe. It uses a combination of monopolar radio frequency (RF) energy, ultrasound to stimulate fat lipolysis (the breakdown of fat cells) and collagen remodelling (for skin tightening), alongside skin cooking, helping to contour the body and face.

Dr Berger’s top tips to keep skin healthy and looking good

1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are numerous scientific articles that prove the importance of regular exercise and a healthy balanced diet to keep the skin healthy and looking good.

2. Use sunscreen (for face, neck and hands at least). This cannot be overstressed. Sun damage is the single most important thing that makes skin look older.

3. Talking of sun damage, it’s important to carry out a regular skin check to detect any suspicious moles or skin cancers early.

4. Chose a good skincare routine that fits your skin type and age. A dermatologist can advise you on this – and it is probably better advice than social media influencer’s offer.

5. Follow a daily skin care routine. With less distractions and more time spent at home, it’s a good time to start a good skin care routine. For example, use a mild face wash twice daily, and a not-too oily moisturiser. Also, if you are just staying home, try to let the skin breathe and use no or little makeup, especially if you suffer from acne.

6. Take special care of your hands. With so much hand washing and the constant use of sanitisers, hands can become very dry and cracked. Use a regular hand cream several times daily to keep the skin in good condition.

7. Consider your Vitamin D levels. Vitamin D needs sunlight to be activated. If your levels are low, talk to your doctor, and try to catch a bit, but not too much, sun here and there.
