Gaming: the rise of Among Us

Why this game is the one to play right now

There’s a new game that’s gone from barely being played to the top of just about every app and games store in the world right now. Among Us! is a game of space deception that sees a group of four to ten players scurry about to either fix or sabotage a spaceship.

Legitimate crew members must complete quick tasks to ensure the ship stays on course, while a team of imposters run around killing everyone else. Each player looks the same, so when a dead body is found it’s up to the regular crew members to try and sleuth out the good guys from the bad. That’s done via a team meeting called after the event of an ‘untimely’ accident.

Most of these team meetings devolve into real crew members justifying why they were at a certain place in the ship, while imposters try and shirk the blame onto someone else. It’s terribly good fun, if not the type of game you’ll lose friends and family over.

One of the reasons it has been picked up so quickly of late (the game released almost three years ago) is its newfound popularity with YouTubers and Twitch streamers (it’s basically a game of ‘Whodunit’ in front of an audience of thousands) and the fact that it’s free to play on smartphones. It’s a fantastic time-killer, and a good way to play with people who might not be into traditional shooters or platform video games.
Among Us! is free on iOS and Google Play. It costs Dhs18 on Steam. For more information visit store.steampowered.com
