There’s a lot of excitement about the Al Qana development in Abu Dhabi.
Speaking to sister publication Construction Week, Fouad Mashal, CEO of Al Barakah International Investment, the company behind the project, confirmed that the development is now 90 percent complete.
Once open, Al Qana will be home to the largest cinema complex in Abu Dhabi, the largest aquarium in the Middle East, with a turtle rehabilitation centre, a huge social, cultural and lifestyle centre, running and cycling paths and more.
“All 11 blocks are 100 percent under construction, the current percentage of completion by block varies every day. Overall, the project is more than 90 percent complete,” said Fouad Mashal, CEO of Al Barakah International Investment told Construction Week.
“The canal area surrounding Khor Al Maqta, a prime location in the heart of Abu Dhabi, has always been a potential hub for development.
“When Abu Dhabi Government was thinking of developing this area on both the sides, we were called upon to share a concept. And that is when we thought of developing a landmark destination that will not only boost tourism, but also be a leisure and dining hub for families.”
“The first major anchor is the National Aquarium. A piece of art from inside and outside, the National Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the Middle East. It will be home to 45,000 water animals brought to Abu Dhabi from all around the world.
“We also have the first stand-alone cinema with about 15 screens, in addition to lifestyle fitness and wellness hub, covering an area of 8,000m2, called The Bridge.”
“I have been living in Abu Dhabi for a very long time now. I have witnessed the capital’s development. But this location is a gateway of Abu Dhabi, and that is what sparked the vision on what can be done to build and develop this area.
“We wanted to bring a concept, where families can spend time together, enjoy walks across the canal, indulge in sports and wellness activities including cycling. The idea has always been to bring a lifestyle destination.”
