Jean genius

Matenity jeans are a must. Check out our guide to picking the perfect pair

Denim quality
Make sure the fabric is soft and with a generous stretch. Bumps don’t take kindly to being cut into by stiff fabrics with zero ‘give’.

Over the bump
Very comfy when you get really big, they can get hot in this climate and are less likely to give you wear once baby arrives.

Under the bump

Great in the first and second trimester – but can either dig in or fall down in the final ‘big momma’ weeks, unless they’re very well cut. Make sure the front band has plenty of stretch, and expandable side panels are a bonus. This style is also great for tiding you over until you’re back in shape after bub arrives.

Size
Select your normal pre-pregnancy size and choose jeans that fit you well all over, but have plenty of stretchy panels and adjustable sections. Try to avoid constricting styles with hidden buttons and elastic expandable waists as these can dig in and get uncomfortable unless the jeans are particularly well designed.

Try them on
Make sure they are really comfortable. Sit down to see if anything is likely to dig in, and take a walk around the shop. Make sure you check the return policy too, and keep the tags on for 24 hours, just in case you need to return them due to lack of comfort.

Tailor to fit

Don’t dismiss a great fit because the legs are too long or the pockets are annoying. You can always get them taken up and sew up the pockets at the same time. Most good retailers offer a free tailoring service.

Be prepared to pay
It’s likely that your jeans will become the staple item in your wardrobe to be dressed up or down. So if you have to spend Dhs600 on a really great pair, then do so.
