The Grilling: Little Erth by Nabz&G’s Ghalia Alul and Nabih Al-Momaiz

The Time Out Market Dubai vegan experts talk conscious dining

With a dynamic plant-based menu, cool café Little Erth by Nabz&G has become one of the city’s go-tos for vegan eats. Founders Ghalia Alul and Nabih Al-Momaiz pride themselves on exciting, quality dishes that are good for the environment, too.

The team will be setting up in Time Out Market Dubai in Souk Al Bahar, Downtown Dubai, in Q1 2021, here’s what Alul and Al-Momaiz have to say about Dubai’s vegan dining scene.

How long have you had Little Erth?

We first started hosting seated dinners to test our recipes in 2015 and were invited for private catering events both in Dubai and Jordan, until we launched the restaurant in January 2017.

Tell us about the dishes you’re most famous for.

One of our most popular starters is the raw spring wrap, which is made from dehydrated papaya and stuffed with fresh vegetables, herbs and mango. Our clients love this dish because it’s a simple yet sophisticated plate of food that is full of flavour and 100 percent made from scratch.

How has the response changed to vegan food in recent years?

Many people transition to a plant-based lifestyle for a variety of different reasons (health, environment, animal rights, etc.). But most recently we’ve come across many non-vegan clients exploring a vegan diet for health purposes especially since the start of the pandemic. People have become much more conscious of acquiring healthier eating habits to boost their immune system.

What’s the most inventive dish on your menu?

We have many successful examples of creating vegan alternatives to some of the most popular Middle Eastern dishes that are heavy on dairy and meat such as kunafa and shawarma. We’ve also experimented with a plant-based alternative to hoisin duck, the famous Chinese recipe.

How do you come up with new recipes?

Some recipes are simply inspired by our nostalgic cravings and flavours from our childhood. We enjoy the challenge of “veganising” traditional, otherwise non-vegan dishes.
