UAE and Qatar sign agreement to restore ties

The GCC Summit was held in Saudi Arabia

The UAE and Qatar have reached an agreement to restore ties between the two countries.

Yesterday (January 5) His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai attended the 41st GCC Summit in Al Ula, Saudi Arabia.

There, the leaders of the GCC states signed the final communique of the 41st Summit of the GCC Supreme Council, which has been named ‘the Summit of Sultan Qaboos and Sheikh Sabah’.

Dubai Media Office tweeted photographs of Sheikh Mohammed signing the closing statement.

Travel between the UAE and Qatar stopped on June 5, 2017.

WAM, the UAE government news source, has reported that leaders of the GCC have “closed ranks” and “underlined the need to coordinate efforts in order to confront common challenges”.

It added: “The final statement noted that the GCC citizens pin hopes on Alula Communique to restore joint action and reinforce the bonds of fraternity and solidarity between the peoples of the region”.

The communique pointed out that the “COVID pandemic has evidenced what can be accomplished when world countries cooperate with each other”.

This follows the news earlier this week that borders were to open between Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
