NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Centre announces new cultural events

There’s a top line-up for this arts and culture hub

The Arts Centre at NYU Abu Dhabi has launched a new programme of events for the new year.

Continuing the performing arts season launched last year, the new programme continues under the same theme ‘A Bridge’, aiming to bring communities and people together through different art forms.

So what’s happening in the next few months?

Continuing the NYUAD Music Recital Series, assistant professor of music at NYUAD, Kate Forman Quayle, will perform a clarinet and bass clarinet recital on Monday January 25.

Returning on Monday February 1, Wednesday 3 and Saturday 6, the Barzakh Festival will be bringing a trio of performers to the fore to mark Black History Month.

Artists performing include Afro-Venezuelan artist Betsayda Machado & La Parranda El Clavo, Martha Redbone Roots Project and Afro-Khaleeji band Boom.Diwan.

On Friday and Saturday February 12 and 13, Manifold – A Festival of Musical Diversity will feature performances from pianist Emanuele Arciuli, flutist and NYUAD faculty member Cristina Ioan, saxophonist and NYUAD faculty member Emil Sein and Abu Dhabi-based dancer Kiori Kawai.

Also showcasing dance, a film called Āhuti by The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, in collaboration with The Chitrasena Dance Company, will be shown on Wednesday February 17 followed by a live artist Q&A.

Rooftop Rhythms will also be returning with Southern Fried Poetry on Friday January 22, followed by a slam competition and open mic night on Friday February 26.

Showcasing film, CinemaNa will also be held monthly from February with screenings of diverse films from the Arab world followed by discussions.

Kicking off the series on Monday February 8 is Between Two Seas, directed by Egyptian/American filmmaker Anas Tolba, followed by three short films, Laymoon, Beshkara, and Nagafa by Emirati director Abdulrahman Al Madani on Monday March 8, and Gaza Mon Amour, by Palestinian filmmakers Arab and Tarzan Nasser on Monday April 19.

All events are streamed online through various portals including The Arts Centre’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

Some events are ticketed and individually priced but many of the events are free of charge.

“We live in an interconnected, online world where we need the arts more than ever before. Our theme, ‘A Bridge’, reflects this yearning to connect,” said artistic director Bill Bragin.

“The rich, diverse and exciting international cast of artists speak to the challenging times we are living through, but also transcend the moment to provide a joyful, life-affirming sense of possibility and freedom.

“We’re especially excited that several of the programs reflect projects commissioned by The Arts Centre, and first-time transnational collaborations.”
