Kids in the UAE can enter a competition to make an outfit out of junk

The recycled fashion competition is aimed at kids between 12 and 18

How are your art and junk cupboards looking after a fair amount of home schooling mums and dads? If you’re kiddos are particularly crafty, you may just want to consider re-stocking it.

An upcoming label is running a recycled fashion competition aimed at kids between 12 and 18 to discover a new generation of designers.

With a focus on sustainability, Junk Kouture, an Irish-born start-up that was formed just over ten years ago in 2010, is asking tweens and teens to create an outfit using everyday rubbish.

Aspiring artists, budding designers and even engineers are being asked envision, design, create and model wearable haute couture styled from things that would otherwise be thrown away.

Anything goes in the competition, the only requirement is that it must be made out of 100 percent recycled materials.

Not keen on going it alone? Students can choose to sign up to the competition either as an individual or as a team.

Finalists from UAE will then go head to head in the virtual final in June against finalists from France, UK, Ireland, Italy and USA.

A national champion will be announced, while an ultimate winner will be crowned Junk Kouture’s world designer of the year.

In addition, a Junk Kouture scholarship will be offered to each of the winning design team. The prize for the winning school will be €25,000 (approx Dhs110,520).

Junk Kouture founder, Troy Armour, says: “It is a hugely exciting time for Junk Kouture. Having been forced to reimagine what Junk Kouture had become over the past ten years, our move to the digital space, coupled with our international expansion plans allowed us to accelerate bringing Junk Kouture to new audiences throughout the world. The programme promotes the empowerment of young people, by challenging them to be creative and resourceful in the design process. Our community is built of like-minded creatives, and we can’t wait to see what the young people of UAE bring to the competition in 2021 and beyond.“
