Local artists create cool art pieces with used Etihad plane parts

Upcycled art is now on display

Etihad Airways has partnered with local artists to create works of art using used airplane parts.

The upcycled artworks have used obsolete aircraft cabin parts that were originally destined for landfill to create environmentally-friendly alternatives to dealing with unwanted parts.

A host of materials were used including fabric rolls, emergency equipment, sidewalls and windows as well as economy class and business class seats.

Tasked with turning the parts in the works of art, locally-based artists Azza Al Qubaisi and Christine Wilson used their creativity to breathe new life into the discarded aircraft parts.

Etihad is displaying the projects at Etihad Headquarters and hopes to commission similar environmentally-friendly works in the future.

“Visiting Etihad’s warehouse of aircraft parts during the COVID-19 pandemic brought back memories of travelling around the world and discovering different cultures,” said Emirati artist Azza Al Qubaisi.

“I was thrilled to have unlimited access to amazing materials that I could upcycle or melt into art for my ‘Seeking Identity’ sculpture series.

“After deconstructing some seats, I have a bigger appreciation for the ergonomics and technology that goes into them – there are hundreds of pieces.

“I’m already working on a second piece of art by melting and casting the scrap materials I didn’t use for my first installation and I can’t wait to share it with the world.”
