Paris’ Louvre Museum puts entire collection online

Explore the world-famous museum’s masterpieces at home

While vaccine passports are opening up the door to international travel, we’re still a while away from going on holiday without a care in the world.

One of the things we miss the most is visiting museums and art galleries featuring the most captivating works around, from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam to the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

And if you’re longing to wander the halls of the Louvre in Paris, you can now enjoy the next best thing from your home as the museum has just put its entire collection online.

If you head over to collections.louvre.fr/en now you’ll be able to look at works including La Liberty Leading the People by Eugène Delacroix and Vénus de Milo completely for free.

You can search for specific works, or browse collections like paintings, sculptures, furniture and jewellery.

Plus, there are also themed albums such as masterpieces of the Louvre, the art of portraiture, and acquisitions made in 2020.

We’re feeling more cultured already.

“Today, the Louvre is dusting off its treasures, even the least-known,” said Jean-Luc Martinez, president-director of the Musée du Louvre.

“For the first time, anyone can access the entire collection of works from a computer or smartphone for free, whether they are on display in the museum, on loan, even long-term, or in storage.

“The Louvre’s stunning cultural heritage is all now just a click away. I am sure that this digital content is going to further inspire people to come to the Louvre to discover the collections in person.”

There are more than 482,000 pieces on the collections website, which includes pieces from the Musée National Eugène-Delacroix and Musées Nationaux Récupération works recovered after WWII.

The Louvre has also just relaunched its regular website, where you can go on virtual tours through the museum.

That’s our weekend sorted.
