Abu Dhabi announces Ramadan 2021 rules and restrictions

Important health and safety measures are in place

A number of important safety measures will be in place in Abu Dhabi during Ramadan to ensure people marking the period in the capital can do so in the safest way.

Officials have said that iftar and suhoor gatherings should be limited to family members who live in the same house.

Iftar tents are also banned this year, while COVID-19 patients are strongly recommended to consult with a doctor before fasting.

Additional measures from the Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee in collaboration with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, echo restrictions already outlined by the country’s National Crisis & Emergency Management Authority.

Officials went on to warn against gatherings, and said Ramadan greetings should be extended through online communication platforms rather than in person.

Iftar meal donations are allowed through online distribution platforms, but the offering and distributing of meals in public areas, including in front of homes, mosques and restaurants, is banned, except by authorised entities.

Measures do allow congregational prayers in mosques for men per precautionary measures, with the duration of Isha and Tarawih prayers capped at 30 minutes.

Zakat and alms donations will need to be completed online for 2021, while religious studies lectures and Holy Quran recital sessions are also to be offered digitally given the current climate.

Those shopping through Ramadan should opt to use contactless payment options, and limit the number of journeys they make to grocery stores. If necessary to shop in-person, avoid peak hours.
