You’d be forgiven for thinking that this dapper Scouser is years older than he actually is (he’s 25). Not because of any facial cragginess (no creases here), but because of the number of acts he’s cropped up in. First appearing in The Little Flames at 18, he then went on to front The Rascals, before most successfully teaming up with bestie Alex Turner for the Scott Walker-indebted Last Shadow Puppets.
First single ‘Inhaler’, a skiffley psych-stomp with verses that are come-ons and a chorus that was born out of a joke (he’s asthmatic), proves he’s still in the thrall of the ’60s. So it’s no surprise that he cites Lennon as a hero, and that Noel Gallagher adds backing to the rose-tinted rock ’n’ strings of ‘My Fantasy’.
This LP was in part produced by Dan the Automator – his track ‘Happenstance’ is a playfully sultry Serge Gainsbourgian duet with French actress Clémence Poésy. Kane is well connected and charming with it. ‘Take the Night with Me’, for example, is the perfect accompaniment to sway to with your honey on a balmy summer’s eve on Lake Como. Should you be so lucky. Referentially retro, but pleasing nonetheless.
