Calling all dog-lovers and Saluki enthusiasts, the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) has just announced the launch of the Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest. The competition will take place from Monday September 27 until Sunday October 3 2021 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Do you have an unbeatable Saluki, or simply love the breed? This is your chance to find out more about them, and possibly even show yours off (if they fit the strict criteria).
The contest will take place under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, and it is organised by the Emirates Falconers’ Club and the Arabian Saluki Center. Those entering their dogs will be competing for valuable prizes and the title of best in breed.
In past editions, people have flocked from around the UAE and the GCC to enter their dogs and take part in the festivities. There are four categories of Saluki that will be considered: Al Hoss (smooth) and Aryash (feathery) males and females. All competitors will need to be microchipped, healthy and vaccinated.
The dog’s lineage as well as manner of walking, head shape and body size will factor into the scores, but it is not just beauty that will determine best in breed. Salukis are known for extreme loyalty to their families, excellent temperament, and unbeatable skills for hunting and tracking prey. They make excellent guard dogs, and can also work with falcons in traditional hunting practises. The dogs’ temperaments, reactions, and hunting skills will all be scored as well, making this a truly unique and holistic event.
Hunting with Salukis is an important part of UAE heritage and tradition. The falcons are used to strike down the prey, and the Salukis chase it down and retrieve it. The Arabian Saluki Centre is the first of its kind in the GCC, and aims to preserve this tradition, and the breed, for future generations.
