Facial scanners for COVID-19 screening installed in Abu Dhabi

Everything you need to know about the new EDE scanners

Health officials in Abu Dhabi have approved the use of EDE facial scanners to detect potential COVID-19 cases.

The scanners are being installed at selected locations across Abu Dhabi, including certain shopping malls, some residential areas and all ports of entry to the emirate from today (Monday June 28).

If you are identified as a potential case you will not be allowed to enter the venue, and will need to get a PCR test within 24 hours.

The technology has been approved following a pilot trial that was conducted in Ghantoot, Yas Island and Mussaffah.

The test proved 93.5 percent accurate in a case study of more than 20,000 people.

The technology measures electromagnetic waves, which change when the RNA particles of the virus are present in the person’s body, giving an immediate positive or negative result.
