Abu Dhabi to get proper address system to ease capital navigation…

Officials have revealed that all streets and buildings in Abu Dhabi are to get a proper name and number in a bid to make the UAE capital easier to navigate around.

The new address system unveiled at Cityscape Abu Dhabi, reported by the National, is the most detailed to date, with more than 9,000 streets to be included.

“Even for security purposes it is important everyone has a proper address. So all the internal roads will have a name,” Ahmed al Mazrooei, a geographic information systems specialist with the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA), told the paper.

The new address system will be put into practice by the end of 2011. Under it all roads will have a unique name with large road signs visible in both Arabic and English.

Buildings will be numbered starting at one end of the road and rising in sequence – odd on one side of the road and even on the other.

Plans even include introducing a postcode and GPS system for emergency services, a DMA official told the paper.
