5 kids’ video games for stressed-out adults to let loose

Throw it back with Mario Kart, Spyro and more

Hands up who wishes they were a kid again? No bills, no stress, no job, no worries – adulting can be hard, and while we unfortunately don’t have a DeLorean, we do have a solution that will allow you to access those happy kid memories for at least a few hours every evening. Are you ready to play?

The dreamy one
Animal Crossing: New Horizons

While many love playing games as a way of relaxing, when our little avatar doesn’t do what we command it can be one of the most frustrating experiences of the day. Animal Crossing: New Horizons won’t lead you down the path of irritation as you slowly build yourself a new life on an island where there is no one to bother you. We might just have found out happy place.

The smile maker
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

This is one game to get old-timers feeling nostalgic. But instead of building weird contraptions (and inspiring a generation of architects), this LEGO edition takes us on a journey of the Star Wars saga brick-by-brick. Everything is awesome (pun intended) in this video game as you do battle with the Empire while collecting as many ship parts and mini kits as possible. With more than 120 playable characters including Indiana Jones (don’t ask, just play), it’s a game that will send your happiness levels soaring into outer space.

The fun upgrader
Mario Kart 8

The man with the moustache in blue dungarees and red cap only brings us joy when he bounds onto our screens. There has arguably been never a frown or a scowl (except from Luigi) when getting involved in the wackiest of races that comprise of the Mario Kart circuit. One of the best of the franchise is Mario Kart 8, which allows go-karters to throw boomerang flowers, piranha plants and even leave terra firma when you decide that racing on the track is too mainstream.

The stress reliever
Rocket League

Football has been the game of the summer so far, and after Euro 2020 we can’t get enough of the beautiful game. Football but instead of players there are… cars? The rules are the same but instead of slide tackles and Cruyff turns, it’s head-on crashes, tumbles and flips and turbo thrusts to leave opponents eating your dust. With so much going on in this game, you might almost forget that there is ball to focus on – while that stress is definitely parked for 90 minutes.

The mood boaster
Spyro Reignited Trilogy

This purple little dragon is out to save the planet as well as boost your mood. A game that is clearly aimed at kids (it doesn’t specify what age though…), Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a remastering of the original editions to get you feeling all nostalgic. A superb soundtrack and wonderfully colorful graphics will do more to soothe you than a candlelit bubble bath, and it’s loads more fun, too.
